The Regret Leech
The Regret Leech sucks the life out of you… Doesn’t seem like much does it? But take a closer look. You messed up, you lost the girl, you blew your credit, you should have started earlier and you should have saved more. You've been dwelling on this for years! You’ve got a lot of those regrets limiting your true potential. When you focus on your past leaches, they bite deeper and each passing moment impacts the severity of each mistake we’ve made.
The weapon against the regret leech is forgiveness. We’ve made mistakes, who hasn’t? You’ve got to forgive yourself for the bad decisions you’ve made in the past. We were different people back then, weren’t we? We didn’t have the knowledge and the fortitude that we have now. It is never too late to defeat the past. Cornel Sanders was way past sixty when he began his pursuit of crispy chicken franchises. Too old? Too late? Never!
Today is our next chance to get the girl, get the job, make the investment or learn the skill. The real difference between success and failure is our attachment to our bad experiences. Successful people know that there are obstacles and see them as just part of the road ahead. Anyone who has tried to accomplish anything of importance has lost and failed many times. To attain something extraordinary we must persevere. Success is gained from embracing the lessons of our failures. To defeat the regret leech we must simply forgive, take a step forward and with each prevailing step we will burn them off. Learn from your regrets, they have taught you to value opportunities and cherish those around you. They have made you humble and caring. They have given you the tools to make new decisions and help others with similar problems. They have given you the opportunity we have together to master level one.
Time for ACTION!
With your journal, place all your major regrets that have been weighing you down and kept you from being your best inside oval circles across the page. After you’ve written them down, look at each one individually and brainstorm the lessons they’ve taught you.
After a few minutes of reflection, cut out the circles leaving holes in the paper. Take them to a safe place and burn them up. Yes, burn them up and lift the burden of regret that has sucked the life out of you for so long. In your journal, all you are left with are the lessons you’ve learned. These are new tools needed to take on this journey. The act is important as we must take action at each level to move forward. Just thinking about it will not eliminate them. You must be a person of ACTION!
ACTIONS to defeat the Regret Leech • Forgive yourself for your past mistakes • Never leave anything left unsaid • Tell 2 people you love them everyday • Live with gratitude for the things we have and the lessons we’ve learned • List your leaches (regrets) and burn them off! • Make 3 new goals for moving forward. • Stop thinking and act!
